Provost marshals are military police who sought deserters, spies, and disloyal citizens, and brought them to justice. They also investigated theft of government property. These files include correspondence, provost court papers, orders, passes, paroles, oaths of allegiance, transportation permits, and claims for compensation for property used or destroyed by military forces.
