The mid-1800s saw a massive influx of Irish immigrants to North America due to crop failures, the Great Famine, and the failed 1848 Rebellion of Irish nationalists. Two disgruntled immigrants formed the Fenian Brotherhood in 1858 and established contact with the Irish Republican Brotherhood in Ireland. After a quelled rebellion in Ireland, the Fenians organized and decided to invade and capture Canada in order to trade it for Irish independence. From 1866 to 1871, Fenian raiders attempted to invade Canada multiple times; the greatest conflict occurred at the Battle of Ridgeway, where Canadian and British forces defeated the raiders. The Canadian militia squashed the final raid in October 1871, ending the Fenian Raids.
