Lt. William Douglas (Doug) Dickson

W

illiam Douglas Dickson is the youngest of five sons. He was known as Doug, or in later years, Buck. When he graduated from Humboldt State College with a degree in Forest Management he knew he would be drafted, so he decided to enlist in the United States Army. He believed in the principle of the Vietnam War, and its effort to stop the domino effect of communism. After basic he enrolled in OCS, opting for infantry over artillery. His letters home from Viet Nam were very descriptive, even though he didn’t tell of the times he was wounded. The day after Christmas in 1967 was a tragic time for our parents when an officer came to their door and gave them the terrible news that Doug had been KIA on Christmas Eve. Doug was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry, posthumously. His loss was a tragedy for all of us. Doug never knew his yet unborn daughter, Robin. He would have been so proud of her. He holds a special spot in all our hearts yet today.
