Awarded a Bar to the Military Cross. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer was in command of two platoons in the front line. Early in the day the battalion on his right lost its front and support line, but, though this left his flank in the air, he maintained his position till the afternoon, when he was ordered to withdraw to the support, when he held on for another two hours, until again ordered to retire, as the enemy had worked completely round his flank. His steadiness and determination contributed largely to the retention of important positions.
