Chief Boatswain's Mate Runowicz was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a crew member of the aircraft carrier USS LEYTE (CV-32) being refitted at the Boston Navy Yard. He was killed by an explosion and fire in the port catapult machinery room aboard ship on October 16, 1953. Chief Boatswain's Mate Runowicz was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
