Battle of Little Big Horn

T

he Battle of Little Big Horn was a major victory for the Indians during the Great Sioux War. General Custer's 7th Cavalry suffered an embarrassing defeat by the warriors led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This battle cannot be described as a massacre or a well-planned military campaign. Simply put, Custer's army was grossly outnumbered. On June 25, 1876, General Custer led his 7th Cavalry towards what he thought was a small, but important, group of Indian warriors. The encampment of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians was actually a major Sioux stronghold. The battle lasted almost two days and the Indians nearly annihilated Custer's men. The Battle of Little Big Horn secured Custer's place in history and represents the last stand of the great Sioux nation before they were permanently defeated and forced into submission.
