rederick William Corney was born May 13, 1897 in Conisborgh, Yorkshire, England, a mining village, in a family to have 13 children, son of John Corney and Sarah Willcock. His eldest brother John would also serve and die for his country. His younger brother Edward Corny was my step-grandfather. After his father suffered ill health due to working at Denaby Main colliery, the family emigrated from Yorkshire, England to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1906. At 21 years of age on June 8, 1918 Frederick was called up under the Canadian Military Service Act in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada joining the 15th Reserve Canadian Infantry Ontario Regiment, Service Number 277299. After only a few weeks training in Regina, he was selected for overseas draft. After only 4 days leave he left for England on July 24, 1918. Unfortunately after arriving in England on October 4 he was admitted into Ward 9 at the Canadian Military Hospital in Bramshott Camp, Hampshire for influenza. Only 10 days later at 5:35 Private Frederick William Corney died on October 13, 1918. He is buried in St Mary Churchyard in Bramshott, Grave Reference III. C. 5, beside his older brother John who was killed in action during the Battle of St Julien Wood on October 21 1914.
