His older sisters claimed that he was twice captured by the Germans but manage to escape because he spoke German.

John Ebert was also an equestrian. I recall as a child that he related a story where he and a couple other servicemen somehow stole horses from German officers, and had a wild ride. I suspect that this may be one of the escape stories.

John Ebert was a graduate of the Jefferson School of Law in St. Louis, MO. Because he was a law school graduate and spoke German he was asked to remain in Germany to assist with the Nuremberg trials. The only son, he declined to return home to care for his widowed, invalid mother and did so until her death in June of 1953.

He then finally married in October of 1953. His bride was also widow with 7 children. They would have 2 additional children together.
