Committed suicideCharles was wounded near Appomattox on the verge of Lee's surrender, and walked with a limp the rest of his life. He grew depressed after a number of failed business ventures, because he could not provide for his large family. Eventually he committed suicide upon learning that his wife was pregnant with their 11th child.
