Tom was a NCOC grad with me in class 3369. We also served together in the 2nd Bn. 8 Inf Reg, 4th Div. He earned the Silver Star on Nov.18,1969 at a place called Plei Mrong.

SERGEANT KILLED, '66 GRADUATE OF PHOENIXVILLE

A 21-year-old Army sergeant from Phoenixville has been killed in Vietnam combat, it was reported Friday by the Defense Department.
Sgt. Thomas J. Hartman, son of Mrs. Ruth N. Hartman of 345 Washington ave., was killed on Nov. 18 during an encounter with enemy forces.
He was a squad leader with the 2d Battalion, 8th Mechanized Infantry, attached to the 4th Division in the central highlands of Vietnam.
He arrived in Vietnam Sept 15 after graduating from NCO school at Fort Benning, Ga.
He seldom mentioned the war in letters to his family and never complained, his brother, Edwin, said.
A 1966 graduate of Phoenixville High School, he was a member of the National; Honor Society and the Key and Varsity Clubs.
He attended Pennsylvania State University for a year and worked as a lathe operator in King of Prussia before being drafted in September 1968.
Survivors in addition to his mother and brother, include a sister, Marjorie.
