The First World War began when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum and quickly declared war when Serbia failed to respond. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire formed the Triple Alliance, while Russia, France, and the United Kingdom formed the Triple Entente. Great Britain sent troops to both the Eastern and Western Fronts, where they faced the realities of life in the trenches and a war that lasted longer than expected. Despite heavy losses, the Allies were able to resist German advances and eventually forced Germany to accept the armistice on November 11, 1918, ending the war.
