COWING ACTING POLICE CHIEF IN MEREDITH
(By Sam Hayward) …About 1934
Charles Cowing, local merchant, “red hot” Democrat, Lieutenant in the Fire Department, prominent Elk and leading citizen here, stepped into a new role last Thursday, when he became acting Chief of Police during the absence of Capt. Chester Bickford.
Lieutenant Cowing, dressed in a brand new and sparkling uniform, appeared early on the streets and directed traffic for some hours at Sanborn Square. He was hoping, he said, to catch some murderer or grasp some beautiful girl just as she was about to fall under a passing truck. “Then I’d become a hero.” He told the reporter, but this was not necessary for the mere fact that Lt. Cowing of the fire department became for the day Captain and Chief of the Police Department was news hot enough to make Page 1 of any live newspaper.
Lt. Cowing is a Laconia product, although a native of Meredith and was for some years a member of the Lake City fire department, was also in business in Laconia, and at one time was Assistant Manager of the Laconia Tavern. In Meredith, where he runs a fine little store near the depot, is raising a fine little family in his home near the store and pretty Mrs. Cowing, well remembered as Katherine Collard, is his ever-helpful assistant. Two little Cowings are seen frequently about the village and the Lieutenant is at present drilling them in police and fire department manuals that they may become fine looking officers and get a chance to save lives like their Dad in the days to come.
Mr. Cowing is very popular in Meredith and is always in demand on public occasions here. He is 32, jolly and bald headed.
Charles Irving Cowing – graduated from Meredith High School in 1924 and went to St. Louis, Missouri – worked in a munitions factory during World War I.
He played semi-pro baseball and basketball in St. Louis. He was nick-named “Spider”. He returned to New Hampshire and married my mother, Katherine Collard. They had two boys, Charles and Kenneth L. Cowing.
He was a police officer in Meredith for a couple of years and a member of the fire department for 50 plus years. I have his badge of 50 years from the Fire Department. He was also a member of a committee to create the Alumni Association for Meredith High School.
Early occupations other than the above, he was a member of the Laconia Fire department, bred and raised Alaskan Huskies as sled dogs throughout New England.
Children of CHARLES COWING and KATHERINE COLLARD are:
