Chautauqua County, New York. He married (1) LYDIA FULLER May 26, 1783 in Chesterfield, Massachusetts, daughter of SAMUEL FULLER and ELIZABETH THOMPSON. She was born August 10, 1760 in Halifax, Massachusetts, and died November 04, 1807 in Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He married (2) ABIGAIL MEECH December 20, 1807. She was born 1767, and died June 29, 1839 in Buffalo, New York.

John Cowing removed to Rhinebeck, New York. His first marriage was to Lydia Fuller, marriage intentions were on May 26, 1783. Lydia died at age 47, on November 4, 1807.

His second wife was Mrs. Abigail Meech, widow of Captain Dennis Meech. John married Abigail on December 20, 1807. Abigail Cowing died at age 69 in Buffalo, New York on June 29, 1836.

John died in August of 1833 at age 70 and is buried in the Lake View Cemetery in Jamestown, New York.

COWING, JOHN--Born about 1761. Died in the town of Ellicott, Chautauqua County, New York, in August, 1833. He served as Private in Massachusetts troops in the war of the American Revolution. Was awarded a pension and is mentioned in the Pension List of 1831, aged 71 years, and residing in Chautauqua County. Location of grave not ascertained.

(Wife of Calvin Cowing)

January 26, 1809 - Mr. C. (Calvin Cowing) called on me this evening and we have come to the conclusion to join hands next Sunday evening. I hope that we both have sufficiently considered it and that we may never have the occasion to wish that it had not taken place.

Sabbath Day (Jan. 28. 1809) - The day has arrived. In a few hours I expect to give public manifestation of the choice that I have made in a partner for life -- yes, for life. If our hearts are truly unified nothing by Death can dissolve this union.

Feb. 21, 1810 - ON the evening of the 6th of this month, when my body lay racked with pain, God's mercy was extended and I was delivered of a son (John Kirkland Cowing).

March 1, 1812 - I record the goodness of God to me. On the 30th of last January I was again delivered of a son (James Anderson Cowing).

Nov. 27, 1812 - Our family have retired to rest and my husband is absent on a journey and not expected before the coming week, if ever.

July 10, 1814 - I experienced His goodness on the 19th of June in a remarkable manner in the birth of my third son (Harrison Otis Cowing).

Nov. 3, 1816 - On the 24th of September, I was delivered of my fourth son.
(Rufus Billings Cowing).

April 16, 1817 - I have been called to pass through a trying scene. Last Saturday eve at 6 o'clock our aged grandmother expired. (Mrs. Margaret Cowing, widow of Prince Cowing). I have tried to examine my conduct toward her in the eight years that we have lived together and I think if I am deceived I have done my duty for her temporal welfare.

February 2, 1818 - Mr. Cowen (husband) left his house and family and has gone on a long journey to the West. (To look for land, perhaps).

December 3, 1818 - My prospects to look forward seem gloomy, a cold winter before me, health poor and surrounded with large family and my dearest friend that cheers my gloomy hours absent the most part of the time.

1819 - On the morning of the 9th inst., I was delivered of my 5th son
(Samuel Emerson Cowing).

April 25, 1822 - I was delivered of my sixth child which proved a daughter (Elizabeth Thompson Cowing).

ON the morning of the 14th of last January 1825, I again experienced preserving goodness in the birth of my seventh child (Estes Howe Cowing).

May 8, 1826 - I once more took up my pen and probably for the last time in this town. Yes, the die is cast, my fate fixed and soon I with my family set out for a far distant land. I have taken leave one after another of my friends and acquaintances. My fountain of tears is about dried up and I feel tolerable composure.

Wednesday, May 10 - I took leave of my friends in Chesterfield with the greatest of calmness and composure that I have ever experienced in so trying a scene, but scarcely had we set out on our long and tiresome journey ere my friends who accompanied us and my tow little ones were exposed to instant death. The horse took fright, the wagon upset, and they all landed on the ground, but 0 miracle to record, they escaped without essential injury. We again proceeded forward to reach the city of Albany, Thursday eve, crossed the river, and returned to a tavern to rest the night. Friday morning enter the boat (Erie Canal Boat) with reluctance, pass the day in gloomy melancholy.

Sabbath A. M. landed us in Utica. I stepped on shore for the first time. I catched at the first spear of grass that presented itself with more eagerness than the miser does his purse of gold.

Monday passed many agreeable places. Tuesday morning raised the cabin windows, found we were in Jordan, 80 miles from Utica. This morning, Wednesday, I arose early, seated on deck in the woods on the borders of Palmira. Yesterday, 4 P.M., arrived in Brighton, called to see my old acquaintance, Mrs. Smith (formerly Relief Buck), was struck with her
appearance. Her countenance denotes speedy dissolution. At 6 O'clock, reached Rochester. Urged by the politeness of Mr. Much and lady, I called and took tea. Comfortable night by reason of the cool breeze we were favored with. The four first days we passed on board were extremely warm, but we have as good accommodations as can be expected considering our number. We have four families on board, consisting of 19 children, besides many other
passengers. Some of the children have been sick. Mine have been remarkably well. Passed Lockport Thursday evening. I think the prospect there exhibited the greatest artificial curiosity I ever beheld. It surpasses the power of description. (What was it?)

Friday morning I ascended on deck to view the pleasant town of Buffalo. The
boat hit in passing under the bridge and threw our little son, Emerson,
overboard. I saw him go, shrieked and fell. They raised me!. I found myself
in the cabin and my child in my arms. A gentleman at the other end of the
boat sprang and saved him from a watery grave.

I spent Friday night about Mr. Mack's and Saturday took a seat in a wagon to
ride Wales (about 25 miles east of Buffalo.) I rode about half way, and
quite fatigued, accepted the invitation of a gentleman to stay at his house
all night. Sabbath morning he conveyed me and about 12 o'clock reached the
house I am now in and 0 gloomy place it appears to me (July 26, 1826).

Sept 23, 1827 - This place which appeared gloomy and lonesome the first
summer I spent here now wears a different hue, the inhabitants seem like
another race of beings. The fact of Nature appears more pleasant and I have
enjoyed a calm agreeable summer. On the 18 of September the addition of a
little daughter (Lydia Fuller Cowing) was added to our family. The November
following (1829) we quit our abode in Wales and on the 1st December reached
this place, the town of Jamestown.

An addition was made to my family September 3, of a daughter (Emily Bissell
Cowing.)

Notes for THOMPSON COWING:
Thompson Cowing was born in the state of Massachusetts, in 1794, died in
Busti, Chautauqua County, New York, at an advanced age. If he descended as
is believed, his early manhood was spent in Saratoga, Ontario, and Yates
counties in New York. In 1839 he came to Chautauqua county settling in
Busti, at what is now the noted summer resort on Lake Chautauqua, Lakewood.
Here he purchased a tract of two hundred and twenty-five acres and devoted
his after life to its cultivation. He was a successful, prosperous farmer,
well known and much respected. He was a Whig in politics. He married
Salome House. Children: Charlotte, John, Charles, Samuel, James, Marietta,
Fordyce B., Married Katherine Strunk and had children: Herbert O. and
Leonard G. Cowing, Ransom F., of whom a daughter died in infancy.

Thompson Cowing appears to have been married twice.

First Marriage was to Eunice Kinney on December 2, 1820. She died on May 6,
1821 at age 20.
They had no children together.

Second Marriage was to Salome House on April 2, 1822. She died on October
23, 1866.
They had eight children together.
