Since its creation in 1861, it has been awarded 3, 459 times to 3,439 men and 1 woman. Fourteen men were awarded the Medal of Honor a second time for a separate action; while five men were awarded both the Army and Navy Medal of Honor for the same action. As of 13 April 2003, there are 137 living Medal of Honor recipients.
