My Uncle Harold served in the Army during WWII. He was a truck driver in General Patton's Thrid Army participating in the famed "Red Ball Express" moving critical combat supplies to the fast moving allied front as General Patton moved across France after the breakout of the hedgerow country in the wake of the D-Day landings. He finished his time in the army as the First Sergeant of the 1070th Labor Supervision Company serving in the grade of Sergeant First Class.

Uncle Harold was born to Elmer Ray Howe and Anna Eva St Clair (Kline) Howe on 22 July 1910 in the city of Kitanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Parnassus (later incorporated in the Greater New Kensington area) and later Arnold Pennsylvania. Harold graduated from Arnold High School in 1930. He was active on the school yearbook staff as well as participating in the school's football program with his younger brother Ernest (Ernie) R. Howe.

Harold was briefly married after high school in West Virgina and worked as a laborer and metals technology specialist. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942. After the war, Harold married the former Gerda Arndt, of Berlin, Germany. The couple moved to New Kensington around 1947. They had three children, Jennifer, Susan, and Thomas. Harold was employed by the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) as a welder. Harold was diagnosed with stomach cancer and passed away on 19 June 1963. He is buried next to his mother and brother Ernie in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell Pennsylvania.

He was grieved by his family and his sole surviving (youngest) brother Elmer Ralph Howe, Jr until his death on 16 Jaunary 1976.
