Garrett joined the Army Air Corps and was trained as a bombardier aboard B-24 aircraft. Deployed to India late 1942; His bomber, "7-11," shot down over Burma on 1 May 1943 by Japanese Oscar fighters from the 3rd Chutai, 64th Sentai on a bombing raid on shipping and harbor facilities at Rangoon. pilot of plane force landed near Bassein, Burma. Surviving crew struck out for Allied lines in India. Captured several days later, they were POWs in Rangoon Central Prision for the next two years. Pilot and engineer died in captivity (Kavanagh and Bodell). Garrett survived the war.
