Basil Othelbert "Jack" Temple: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - Wednesday, April 24, 1991 Deceased Name: Basil Othelbert "Jack" Temple Basil Othelbert "Jack" Temple,a retired executive with Stratton Baldwin Co., died Sunday of cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 69. Mr. Temple was born in Kansas and lived in Metairie and Destrehan for 17 years. He attended the University of Kansas and Washburn University and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Mr. Temple was a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was shot down in a B-25 aircraft over northern Italy and was listed as missing for six months. His help to British intelligence in building an airfield enabled other MIAs and four downed American pilots to escape. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Mendez Temple; three daughters, Nancy T. Hawgood of Wilmington, Del., Laura A. Temple of San Diego, Calif., and Lisa Highley of Rockwall, Texas; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Mendez Smith of Baton Rouge; a stepson, Michael Mendez; a sister, Elizabeth T. Neuner of St. Louis; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 3412 Haring Road. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Mausoleum. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie, is handling arrangements. Page: B4
