George Palmer McSwain served his country honorably, first in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961, and then in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1980. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1965, and transferred to Vietnam as a pilot aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany. He was shot down in March 1966, and was a prisoner of the North Vietnamese for 6 1/2 years. He returned to the U.S. in March 1973, and is now honorably retired.
