I remember driving down to Vista, California often to visit my grandparents when I was very young, about 4 or 5 years old. This was during the Vietnam War. What I didn't realize was that we were actually taking my dad to San Diego. He was in the Naval Reserve and taught celestial navigation to marines and sailors as part of his duties at Camp Pendleton. My uncle (my mom's brother) was a Marine in Vietnam, too. I remember watching the evening news on TV with my mom and grandma and seeing the military fighing in Vietnam. Everytime I would see a marine sitting in a helicopter I would point at the TV and say "There's Unka Dave!" We were lucky he came home safe.
