Ray was the son of Grant E Smith, who was the son of Joseph Anthony Smith, who was the son of John X Smith. * * * Knowing he was about to be drafted into the Koren war he signed up to serve in the Amy. While based at Fort Lewis, he called up a local Mormon bishop hoping to set up 3 blind dates for him and his two friends during an artillery training session in Yakima, Washington. My mother was one of the girls. Although they where not matched up together. He really liked her and thought about her often. While based in Alaska for 6 months, he began writing her. Soon through correspondence they became good friends and later, went on their first date when he was stationed back at Fort Lewis. My mother's been known for being quoted, "I should have known from the first date; what I was in for." While borrowing her parents car he opened the passenger side door gently ushered her in and then went around the car to the drivers side, opened the door, and got in. Unbeknownst to him he's gotten into the back seat.
