Lt Roy Gibson Air Medal citation

"Aircraft Action Report" (above) for the second strike on the airfield(s) at Iwo Jima. They encountered intense Japanese antiaircraft fire over Iwo. On the first strike, Ens Kalousek's plane was hit by a 20 mm shell putting a large hole through his wing (they made it back OK). On the second strike (led by Lt Gibson or possibly Lt Wood) they took off from the USS Yorktown at about 2:30 pm local time and arrived over their target at Iwo at around 4:00 pm. Lt Gibson's Air Medal citation (above) states he flew "through intense enemy fire which seriously damaged his plane". His daughter Ruth Christine Gibson stated: "He never received the Purple Heart he was entitled to for injuries sustained in air combat". It's not known who the two crewmen were that flew with Lt Gibson.
