February 5, 2015 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, February 14 at 4 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Wiscasset, Maine at a later date. Norman was born on February 17, 1920 in Chehalis, Washington. He joined the US Navy in 1941 and was commissioned as an ensign after completing flight training in Corpus Christi, TX. He flew numerous combat missions as a carrier pilot in WWII in the Pacific Theater where he was awarded four Air Medals. He also served in the Korean War. He retired in 1966 as a Captain after 25 years of active duty as the commanding officer of NARTU Lakehurst in Lakehurst, NJ. He was a member of the Navy League and the American Legion Post 39. His second career was with Monmouth, New Jersey Boy Scout Council, and with the Trans Atlantic Boy Scout Council in Europe, where he was the Director of the Explorer program. He retired from the Scouts with 20 years of service. He loved flying and being able to travel. He celebrated his 85th birthday by getting his gliders pilot license and making solo flights. He was a published author with books about his experience as a Navy pilot in WWII and another about the loss of his son George in Vietnam. He was predeceased by his first wife of 50 years, Jean Marie Devaney Berg; and second wife of 22 years, Diane Borst Manning Berg; and his sons, Donald E. Berg and George P. Berg. He is survived by his: daughter, Norma Jean Black and husband, Fred, of Winterville; grandsons, Paul Black and fiance;e, September Barnes, of Cary, NC, George Black and wife, Kimberly, of Wilson, NC and Donald Berg and wife, Kathryn, of Gloucester, VA; and six great-grandchildren, Bronwen, Wiley, Miles, Gwendolyn, Cieara and Kaylyn.
