John Allan Jr

John Allan Jr. (23 August 1831- 3 July 1863) was a persistent and devoted soldier enlisted in the confederate army in the 6th Virginia Cavalry. The 6th Virginia Cavalry was a regiment in Virginia for the service of Confederate States during the Civil War.

John Allan Jr attended the University of Virginia in the 1850s. He was enlisted in the 1860 census in Virginia as a farmer. John Allan Jr married Henrietta Hoffman in which they later had 2 kids, Hoffman Allan and Louise G. Allan. He had 2 younger brothers; William Galt Allan (36) and Patterson Allan (38). William Galt Allan was enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 as a Lieutenant in Company H, in which he later became Captain and the duty of Quartermaster. On November 22, 1865 he married the widow of John Allan Jr, they did not have kids of their own, but raised his brothers kids as his own. Patterson Allan was also enlisted in the Confederate Army during Civil War. John Allan (55), his father was a scottish immigrant and tobacco merchant in Richmond, VA. He later married Francis Keeling they did not have children of their own, but adopted a three year old child, Edgar Poe. When Francis died he later married Louis Gabriella Patterson (81). When John Allan passed away he left a fortune to his family.

John Allan Jr was enlisted in the 6th Cavalry, company S on October 29,1961. From September 12 to October 31, 1861 he was present when he was commissioned to Camp Letcher located in Kentucky as an adjutant, a military officer who's an administrative assistant to a senior officer. Later from November to December, 1861 he was present when he was stationed at Bulls ford. The following year, January and February of 1862, John Allan was present when he was stationed to G.W Smith. On September and October of 1862, he was stationed near Charleston. November of 1862, he was absent on special duty by order. During his enlistment he signed off to transfer and release weapons. He was also given stationary supplies such as 10 packs of writing paper, blank books, envelopes and bottles of ink to give out and write to men back and forth.

John Allan Jr anticipated his next battle would be his last, the night before his final battle he wrote a note that stated his body should be delivered to Baltimore, and anyone who would do so will receive a $500 reward. He appeared on a report of the killed, wounded and missing from the 6th Regiment Virginia Cavalry, from the time of leaving the Rappahannock, to recrossing the Potomac July 18, 1863; John Allan was killed in Fairfield in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. The battle of Gettysburg main event was when 12,000 confederate soldiers were against the center of the union line, pickett's charge. Most of the Confederates were shot down by artillery fire, John Allan Jr was shot in battle during the charge.

He was buried on April 15, 1866 at Shockoe Hill Cemetery located in Richmond, VA along with his mother and father, years later his two brothers were buried near them.
