Joseph Barnett was born in 1835, in Harpers Ferry, VA 3). He worked as a laborer until he turned 27 and lived with Daniel Barnett, Annie Barnett, and Jacob Barnett. In 1861 he joined the Union Army as a Private, in the 35th PA infantry. He was taken prisoner and was held in the Andersonville Georgia Prison camp. On March 25th 1865, he died in the camp, of diarrhea.

Barnett’s company was composed of men all over the area. They were mustered in at Washington on June 27th, 1861

Barnett was recruited in Franklin County into “D” company of the 35th PA infantry 2). He saw action in the Battle of Fredericksburg, The Battle of Gettysburg, and Battles of the wilderness. During their time together as a unit they lost 3 officers and 107 men to battle wounds, and 73 to disease. They were eventually mustered out on June 11th, 1864 1). Unfortunately Joseph Barnett had been taken prisoner and died as a POW in Anderson Ville Georgia.3)
