BIOGRAPHY

William Carver Senior origins have not been documented, but he may have been among a large number of settlers who migrated into Person County, North Carolina in the early 1770's from Virginia. He was evidently living in the Stories Creek area of present-day Person County as early as 1771. The large size of his family suggests that he may have been married more than once. In 1779, William purchased from the State over 900 acres of land in two tracts "on the waters of Stories Creek". William Carver Senior and his family were farmers, raising tobacco, corn and other crops. By 1800, he was operating a grist mill (Carver's Mill), on Mill Branch, a small stream that feeds from the west into Chub Lake (Barnett's Mill Pond) on Stories' Creek.

Note:
St. Paul's Parish, which occupies land in what is now King George County, was in Stafford County until 1777.
By an act passed october, 1776, the boundaries of Kig George and Stafford were altered and a line run from Muddy Creek on the Rappahonnock to the mouth of Potomac Creek was made the division. Prior to this act the portion of the present counties lying on the Potomac formed Stafford County; and that on The Rappahnnock formed King George.

William Carver, Sr., who bought nearly 100 acres of land in the Ghents Creek and Stories Creek area from 1778-1810, moved thre from Virginia where acquisition of land was all but impossible except for those few wealthy families who already owned huge Farms. The Piedmont area of North Carolian offered a chance to own land and at the bargain rate of 50 shillings per hundred acres. William Carver had eight sons and three daughters: Thomas, Josias, Benjamin, Robbert, Lozen, Landrum, Hosea, etc…….

1785 built grist mill on spring-fed brandh (today known as Mill Branch) which feeds from the west into Stories Creek (less than a mile north of Five Forks today). It was the most accessible mill to the farmers in the area of Barnett's Pond.

The eastern half of Caswell County became Person County. Person County was part of Caswell County until 1791/1792.
By dividing Caswell County into two squares, each side measuring approximately twenty (20) miles in length, the settlers formed two counties of 400 square miles (1,000 km2) each.

1814 mill was rebuilt by William's sons and arrangements made to divide the profits among them. A new road was built which connected the mill to one of the main roads leading into Roxborough and commerce of assort flourished.

Carver - Oakley - Clayton Cemetery, Five Forks, Olive Hill Township, Person County, North Carolina, (North West of Roxboro).

"Five Forks", North of Water Works Lake at the intersection of Nora Poole Road (1341), Morton-Pulliam Road (1342), Jasper Clayton Road (1342) and City Lake Road (1336).

There are about 40 graves here marked with very old, plain, field rocks. Listed on the Person County Cemeteries as the Clayton Cemetery.
