ROBERT HUSTEAD was born 1755 in The Highlands, Duchess County, NY, and died 1838 in Fayette County, PA. He married SARAH MCDONALD, daughter of ALEXANDER MCDONALD and SARAH ARCHER . She was born 1765, and died 1842 in Fayette County, PA.
The Highlands is the Hudson River bank going south of Fishskill to Peekskill--today Hudson Highlands State Park. He appears on the Pittsburgh payroll in Dunmore’s War of 1774. He served as a private and a payment is due him from West Virginia in 1775 for flour barrels he made for the militia. His occupation must have been a cooper. He apparently received Bounty Land for his service and there settled at least for a brief time in what is now Harrison County, WV.. In 1788 he acquired 400 acres on both sides of Booth’s Creek, near Hustead Fork. He and Sarah sold this property in 1791. His name appears a Hughsted on these land records.
His father is most likely son of David born in Greenwich 1731 as there is no other logical choice. DNA WAS THOUGHT to possibly make this impossible. However, new results open up the strong possibility again. Many of the exact relationships of the men who were thought to be Robert's brother aren't certain. Nor is there proof that any of those believed to be John 1731 son definitely are. However DAR genealogists have accepted these men multiple times. One of Robert's direct defendant's Carrie's the same marker as descendants of David
Robert's first son is John; his second is David, most likely after his grandfather. There is also a Lydia as a daughter who could be named after David's daughter. I believe this can be heavily weighed in judging Robert's lineage.
The DAR has been presented with family records of James E Hustead, Uniontown native and descendant of Robert, and James W Husted, Peekskill native, and descendant of another branch, as documentation as to John's 1731 parentage of Robert and Moses.. It is claimed on application that John went to Dutchess County at young age where at 18 he fathered Moses.
Another fact that has to be considered in identifying various Husteds in Dutchess County, there were several different brothers and cousins who migrated from Greenwich to there before the revolution.
