Pvt Moodie was born in Edinburgh Scotland. He enlisted into the US Army on December 15, 1874 in New York, NY. He was described as 5-8, gray eyes, brown hair & a florid complexion. His civilian occupation was coachman.

It was believed Moodie had been a dragoon in the British Army, before coming to the US.

On February 6, 1875, he was assigned to Company A, 7th US Cavalry at Livingston AL. His daily duties were quatermaster teamster.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company A was assigned to Maj Reno's battalion. Moodie was killed during the retreat from the Valley Fight to a hill that was later named Reno Hill.

It is likely Moodie was buried where his remains had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top oof Last Stand Hill.
