Per "Connecticut, Military Questionnaires, 1919-1920" (Ancestry.com)

Enlisted on 17th of Sept. 1917 at New York city, N. Y. as a Private in the Engineers. Assigned originally to D. Company, 6th U.S. Engineers, 3rd Division.

Trained at Fort Slocum for 10 days. Washington D.C. for 2 months and then France.

Embarked from Hoboken on [USS] Huron and arrived at St. Nazaire in December [1917].

"Proceeded to Champlite [sic], to Somme front.
From Somme to Marne, to Hospital."

"Trained at Champlite [sic]."

"First went into action March 15th , Somme."

Participated in the following engagements: "Somme offensive. Also from June 12 to July 15th Marne, and from July 18th I was gassed and put out of action."

Under medical care: Pensylvania University Hospital near Vichy.

Permanently disabled (through loss of limb, eyesight, etc): "I was for 4 years sick."

Arrived at New Port News, Va. on [USS] Martha Washington.

Discharged from service at Camp Upton May 27, 1919 as a Private.

Occupation after the war: merchant.

If a change of occpuation [sic] was occationed by reason of disability acquired in the service, describe the process of re-education and readjustment, and indicate the agencies or individuals chiefly instumental [sic] in furnishing the new occupations:

"I was disable [sic] from 1918 to 1923 Unable to do a hard days work but I managed to get olone [sic-along] without any help. My copensation [sic] was 8.00 a Month After 12.20 a month & also 20.00 a month and then stopped."

What was your attitude toward military service in general and toward your call in particular? "Good. I Enlisted because my Country wanted me."

What were the effects of camp experience in the United States upon yourself - mental and physical?
"I never felt better in my life and for my experience I could never learn in College."

If you took part in the fighting, what impressions were made upon you by this experience?
"It is only a dream. I can't express them."

What has been the effect of all these experiences as contrasted with your state of mind before the war?
"Can't explain."
