The Guerrant family in the United States are descendants of the French Huguenot, Guerin family. Huguenots immigrated to America during the persecution of the Protestants in France and settled in Virginia, New York, and South Carolina. Records in an Huguenot Church in Powhatan County, Virginia, show "John Guerrant, born 1733." (“As of March 18th 2014, the Intellectual Reserve, Inc listed on its website….)."

John W. Guerrant was born in 1834. Before he enlisted into the Confederate Army on December 25th 1860 (“As of March 18th 2014, the Intellectual Reserve, Inc listed on its website…. ), he was a 26 year old farmer from Buckingham Virginia. He was originally from Goochland County, Virginia and moved to Buckingham with his Father (John Guerrant) and who is also perceived as his mother who is the same age as his father in their census papers (“As of March 18th 2014, the Intellectual Reserve, Inc listed on its website…. ).

He was enlisted into the 44th Infantry of Virginia Company C on June 14th 1861 (“As of 2017, the Ancestry corporation, listed on this website….),

A year after enlisting into the Confederate Army (“As of 2017, the Ancestry corporation, listed on this website….). He started off as a Private and worked his way up to becoming a 2nd Lieutenant (“As of 2017, the Ancestry corporation, listed on this website….). He served in the 44th for two years until on July 20, 1862 he was sent to the Chimborazo hospital (located in Richmond, VA) with a diagnosis of Boil Fever (“As of March 18th 2014, the Intellectual Reserve, Inc listed on its website…. ) which causes large swelling lumps filled with puss to cover your entire body. The sickness also came with fever, stomach illnesses, as well as fatigue and lack of balance. He did not return to his infantry until January of 1863. At that time his infantry was now a part of the Army of Northern Virginia which took part in the Battle of Gettysburg where Guerrant was killed in battle on July 2nd 1863 (“As of 2016, the Historical Data Systems, Inc., listed on this website….).
