Lt. McTolf joined the Army AIr Corps in 1940 and later trained as a pilot at Freeman Army Air Field, Seymour, Indiana, graduating in November 1943. He flew the AT-10 at this advanced training base.

He was then assigned to the 335th Bombardment Group (Medium) at Barksdale Field, Louisiana where he learned to fly the B-26.

He was killed during a take off in North Africa in a B-26 from an airbase near Casablanca, Morrocco (possibly Marrakech).

Memorial for him is at the North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia.
