Private James Sweeney was born ca. 1838 in Tennessee.
In 1860 he was living at the residence of Nancy White in Carroll County, Tennessee. He was a farm laborer.
He enlisted on June 4th, 1862 at Louden, Louden County Tennessee in Captain Davidson’s Company, as a substitute for John W. Poindexter. He was left sick near Stevenson, Alabama on June 27th, 1863 and never returned to the company.
The date and place of his death are unknown, as is the place of interment.
