Mildred Gontjes, 84, of Deer Lodge, MT, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at the Powell County Hospital. She was born on July 3, 1916 in Plymouth County, Iowa and spent most of her adult life in Minnesota. During the 1950s, she worked for Chung-King/Jeno Foods and became president of the union, a post she held for 10 years. She was elected Vice President of the Head of the Lakes Council during that same period In the '60s, Mildred became general manager of Neal Bort Pies. She was very active in the Democratic Party and attended numerous conventions in Minnesota and in Washington, D.C. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and country music. She moved to Deer Lodge in 1996 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Mildred married Martin S. Gontjes in 1935. He died in 1961. Her second husband, John Kniep, also preceded her in death, as did son, Ronald Gontjes, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Gontjes, two sisters and one brother. Mildred is survived by daughter and son-in-law Trish and Jim Brown, Deer Lodge, MT; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Karl Kellems, Leakey, TX; sisters, Elaine Cole, Sedona, AZ; and Beulah Fostere, Gilbert, AZ; Violet Miller, Pine City; sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Lester Yost, Pine City, brther-in-law, Harlan Lange, Spokane, WA; nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great grat grandchildren. At Mildred's request, no services were planned. She was cremated, and burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Hinckley at a later date. Published in the Pine City Pioneer, page 8, July 5, 2001.
