Sgt. Patrick Grady (alternate spelling: Ghrady), was born approximately 1821[1] in Ireland to Anthony Grady, a laborer.[2] After some time, Patrick Grady moved to England and settled in the city of London in the Rose Alley community. Around the age of 25, Patrick Grady married Ann Toughey, a woman five years his senior,[3] on November 2nd, 1846 in the Parish Church in the Parish of St. Botoloph, Bisphogate, in the City of London.[4] At an unknown date, Grady and his wife Ann immigrated to America and eventually settled in New York City, New York and took work as a painter. [5] On August 3rd, 1861, at 40 years old, Patrick Grady enlisted in New York City to serve three years on the side of the Union Army in the Civil War. He was mustered in as a Private to Company B of the 65th New York Infantry Regiment (also known as "The First United States Chasseurs").[6] On his muster roll, his description read as: 5ft 7, gray eyes, light brown hair, and light skinned.[7]

After two years of service, Pvt. Grady was promoted to Corporal on April 1st 1863.[8] After his promotion, Cpl. Grady was granted furlough, a leave of absence,[9] along with other members of the 65th New York Infantry Regiment. [10] At Brandy Station, Virginia, he re-enlisted as a veteran with the 65th New York Infantry Regiment to Company B on December 26th, 1863.[11] Corporal Grady’s continuous efforts in war allowed him to earn the promotion of Sergeant at an unknown date. After serving much of his time in Company B of the 65th New York Infantry Regiment, Sgt. Grady was transferred to Company G within the same regiment on September 1st, 1864. [12] Soon after his transfer to Company G, on September 19, 1864, [13] Sgt. Grady was deployed at the Third Battle of Winchester under General Phillip Sheridan.[14] At this battle, Sgt. Grady most likely received a fatal gunshot wound which attributed to his death at age 43 that same day. On his Window’s Pension, Ann Toughey (Grady) was listed as the only beneficiary as she and Sgt. Grady had no children.[15]
