Andrew Jackson Shill was born in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio. He lived there until around the early 1860's when the family moved to Lafayette, Indiana. He worked as a mail carrier in Indiana carrying mail between Lafayette and various parts of Indiana. On the 1st of April, 1862, along with his brothers John Henry and Thomas Jefferson, he enlisted in the Union Army. They all were in the 26th Indiana Infantry, G Co. Their residence was listed as Concord, Indiana. During a battle in Morganza, Louisiana, Andrew and his brother Thomas were captured by the confederates. They walked to Tyler Texas along with many more prisoners. Some only in shorts with no shirts or shoes. He was fed only a tablespoon of corn and sometimes a piece of dried beef. Andrew and Thomas remained prisoners for 10 months. They were part of a prison exchange. They all mustered out, April 4, 1865. After the war, he moved to Iowa along with his brothers John and General Shill. According to the Federal census, in 1870, he was living with his brother General . He met and later married Elnora Ropp on Oct 5, 1873. They had 2 boys, Arthur and Harland. She died in 1908. He then married Lena Hanson Aug 8, 1908. They had one child. Lena died in 1910. Wearabouts of child is unknown. Her sisters came to Iowa from Minnisota to bring her home for burial. He then married Edna Cline. They had one son, Lee Dorman in 1914. Andrew moved to Nebraska with Edna and Lee and while visiting in Iowa he died.
