Civil War: Company G, 2nd California Cavalry

Jabez Franklin Lovejoy enlisted as a private at San Francisco, California, September 23, 1861, and was mustered into Company G, 2nd California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco October 10. Private Lovejoy was posted to Camp Independence, Inyo County, California, where he was killed in action by Indians March 3, 1863, and buried in the Camp Independence post cemetery. Sometime thereafter Jabez Lovejoy was disinterred and sent to his family in Illinois to be buried alongside his brother Phineas Lovejoy, who was killed in action in 1862. Later, when the remains of soldiers buried at Camp Independence were disinterred and transferred to San Francisco National Cemetery, partial remains were found in his grave and buried here.
