Horatio N. Bennett was born on May 12, 1843 to John C.S. and Sally M. Bennett in Trumbull, Fairfield, Connecticut. Horatio was one of eight children, being the fourth youngest. Horatio Bennett enlisted in the Union army on January 2, 1864 where he was assigned to Company A of the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery.[1][2]

Horatio's unit participated in multiple battles, most namely, the Battle of Cold Harbor and the Third Battle of Winchester.[3] During the Battle of Cold Harbor, the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery, led by Colonel Elisha S. Kellogg, engaged in a 13 day battle against Confederate forces just outside of Richmond, Virginia. The unit sustained almost 300 casualties in the Union defeat. Approximately three months later, the unit engaged in combat with Confederate forces on September 19, 1864, during the Third Battle of Winchester (Opequan). Horatio N. Bennett was killed in action on this day and is currently buried in the Tashua Hill Cemetery in his hometown of Trumbull, Connecticut.[4]
