on of William B. Chamberlain and Elizabeth (Betsy) Lloyd, of Washington Co., PA. Samuel never knew his mother, who died in Feb. 1833, when he was just two weeks old. In 1850, when he was 17, Samuel was living in the household of Thaddeus Stanton, a saddler. He must have learned the trade at that time, for he was soon to become a saddler himself in Canonsburg, PA. Samuel first married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Arnold in 1857. With her, he had four children: Martha Jane; Wm. H.; John Wesley; and Calvin R. In 1872, Lizzie died. Several years later, Samuel married Rebecca Ferguson. The family eventually moved to Pittsburgh. In 1900, Samuel, Rebecca, and son Calvin R. were living in Chartiers Twp., Allegheny Co.
