Donald M. White, 80, a retired rear admiral who was a naval aviator during World War II and the Korean War and who received the Navy Cross, the Navy's highest award for valor except for the Medal of Honor, died of cardiac arrest Sept. 10 at a hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

He was awarded the Navy Cross for leading a torpedo squadron during an attack on Japanese forces in 1943. He was cited for "extraordinary heroism" for giving chase to enemy planes while being fired upon.

Adm. White, a former Alexandria resident, was a 1937 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and became a naval aviator in 1940. He was based at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack and was involved in the earliest offensive actions of the war.
