Maynard Pat O'Brien 83, member of Eastern Illinois University's athletic department from 1946 to 1974, died Friday at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Charleston

Mr O'Brien was known for his contribution to intercollegiate track and cross country which he coached for 27 and 18 years re spectively at Eastern Illinois His last track team was the 1974 NCAA College Division co- champ and the 1968 and 1969 cross-country teams were NCAA College Division national cham pions His teams won nearly 70 percent of their dual meets in both sports according to university spokesman Mr O'Brien joined the universi ty in 1946 as football coach po sition he held for nine seasons He coached the 1948 team to its first bowl game the Com Bowl Before going to EIU he was coach and administrator at Lewiston High School 1931-34 Mt Olive High

School 1935-37 Carlinville High School 1938-41 and Decatur High School 1941-42 During World War II he spent years in the Navy leaving with the rank of lieutenant commander He was native of Canton and graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University where he earned 1 1 let ters in football basketball and track He received master s de gree and doctorate from the University of Illinois Mr O'Brien is member of the NA Ia Helms Hall of Fame char ter member of the EIU athletic Hall of Fame former member of the Olympic Committee and served as president of the NCAA and NAIA National Coaches As in track and cross coun try Upon Mr O'Brien's retirement in June 1974, the university hon ored him by announcing that Lin coln Field the track and football stadium would be renamed O'Brien Stadium Mr O'Brien is survived by his

wife Sue son David two step daughters Carol Sue Hankins and Laurel Hankins brother Frankj sister Evalin Ogden and three grandchildren Visitation will be from 5 to 8.
