on of Ephraim Oliphant and Sarah Higgins Stout, of Hunterdon Co., NJ, and Loudoun Co., VA. Husband of Hannah Amos, whom he wed in VA in 1775. John and Hannah were the parents of twelve children: Rebecca; Samuel; Jas. G.; Thos. A.; Elizabeth (Betsey); Sarah (Sally); Hannah; Mary Ann (Polly); Anna; Rachel; John; and Abby. John Oliphant was a gunsmith, blacksmith, and wagon maker. During the Revolution, he moved to Washington District, NC, to a part of the state that would eventually become Greene Co., TN. He served as an express rider and wagonmaster for NJ troops, and after moving southward helped outfit the NC troops for the Battle of King's Mtn. Listed by some sources as simply "John Oliphant."
