Stories about The Lunceford CSA Cemetery

The Lunceford Cemetery, near the Carters Grove Communty in Taliaferro County, Georgia, in GMD 605, contains three marked Confederate graves. They are for Strozier, David and James Lunceford. The first two are sons of the plantation owner, John Columbus Lunceford and Margarett Strozier and James is believed to be a cousin. David married on December 19, 1860 to Sarah Ogletree, daugher of Asbury F Ogletree and Martha Ann Thompson. Strozier married on April 13, 1856 to Martha Ann P Evans, daughter of Jesse Evans and Rebecca Thompson. The cousin listed as James Thomas Lunceford was the son ot Peter Hazel Lunceford and Sarah Poss.

A Lunceford family historian says that two more Confederate soldier sons, John Columbus III and Solomon are also buried here. Solomon's wife was Pricilla Ogletree, who never drew a CSA pension. John Columbus III's wife died during the war years and she too is buried here. Since neither wife received a pension, neither soldier got a marker. (Pricilla is my ancestor, she was the daughter of Asbury F Ogletree and Martha Ann Thompson.)
