Sion married his first wife Susan Townsend and they had seven children James, Susan Amanda, Martha, Lavinia, Volney, Hannah, and Joshua Fredrick. Sion and Susan started having problems due to his temper and always wanted to go off and fight in the different conflicts. In 1855, Susan ran off and eloped. Sion went to court and filed for a divorce. After three court cases and a year later the divorce was granted in Ft. Bend, Texas in 1856.
In 1858, Sion married his second wife Mary Indiana Rhodes and they had three children Byron, Edward, and Hicks. Hicks was the only child to reach adulthood.
From 1858 to 1860, Sion raced horses. He had a mare named Bero who won many races. His wife Mary grew vegetables and fruit and entered the items at the local fairs.
