Aircraft Action Report (5 pages) for the mission Harold was killed on. This document provides the most definitive account of the events that fateful day.

Early morning June 12th 1944 they launched from the USS Yorktown to bomb Orote Airfield Guam. This flight was to be VT-1's first venture into combat and their baptism by fire.

Also killed was the pilot Lt Norman Merrell and the gunner AOM2c Stanley Carr. The aircraft was a TBM1-C with side number 90 and bureau number 25424 (sources: Yorktown report, AAIR).
