John Ambrose Wright was born in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota on August 22, 1924. His father was Frederick D. Wright who was born in Minnesota and worked as a Building Inspector. He served in WWI as a Military Police and he and his wife are buried in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. His mother was Lois Herrick Wright and she was also born in Minnesota. John was their only child, his twin brother died at birth.

He was working for the McFadden Lumber Company in December 1942 when he registered for the draft. He than enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II. Wright had the rank of Private. Service number assignment was 37552915. Attached to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division as a Paratrooper.

He lost his life on D Day June 6, 1944. He was being transported on board a C-47A Skytrain #42-100905 from the 9th Air Force. They were being flown to Drop Zone D in the morning of June 6, 1944, in support of the D-Day landings. The transport was brought down by German anti-aircraft fire west of Magneville with the loss of 18 paratroopers and the transport's 4 crew members.

John A Wright is buried at Plot F Row 11 Grave 5, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. This is an American Battle Monuments Commission location.
