Private First-Class Webster Hunt Daniel, born 20 Jun 1920, was the son of William Marvin Daniel and Celia Dawn (Phillips) Daniel of Seneca, Oconee County, South Carolina. Seneca is in northwestern South Carolina 30 mi WSW of Greenville.

In the 1930 census 9-year-old Webb is living with his parents and siblings William Jr 17, Phillip 15, and Robert 11, on Townville Road in Seneca Township. His father is a carpenter, and his mother is a bookkeeper for a furniture store.

Webb graduated from Seneca High School in 1938 where he was captain of the football team. On his Oct 1940 draft registration Webb is living at 317 E Lee Street in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia and working at The Free Press newspaper.

Webb enlisted 3 Oct 1941 at Fort McPherson in Atlanta. He’d had four years of high school and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under skilled compositors and typesetters. He was assigned to the _ Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division.

The 60th Infantry spearheaded the November 1942, invasion of French Morocco at Port Lyautey, winning the arrowhead assault landing device in an action which laid the basis for its distinctive nickname 'Scouts Out'.

After a period spent in guarding routes of communication and training, the 60th Infantry re-entered the battle of the mountain areas of Tunisia in March 1943. The 9th and 1st Divisions were to seize opposite sides of the El Guettar Pass, enabling the 1st Armored Division Taskforce “Benson” to roll through without being fired on from its flanks. “H-Hour” was 6 A.M. on March 28th, 1943.

The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for South Carolina show Daniel, Webb H, Pfc from Oconee County was killed in action 30 Mar 1943 so we can assume he was killed somewhere just east of El Guettar with Task Force Benson. Webb’s US WWII Hospital Admission Card File says he was killed by multiple shrapnel wounds.

Webb’s brother Robert was killed in action 12 Jul 1944 in France. A double cenotaph marker in memory of Webb and Bobbie was placed in the Daniel family plot at the Mountain View Cemetery in Seneca.
