David Tate

S

on of David Tate (1759-1838) and Comfort Holmes Knox (1767-1841). He was born in Botetourt Co., VA, and was the second husband of Mary (Polly) Chamberlain (1788-1872), whom he married on 25 Feb. 1816 in Grainger Co., TN. David Tate reportedly fought in both the War of 1812 and the Florida war. He bought the Chamberlain "plantation" in May Spring, TN, on the Holston River from Mary's brother, James Chamberlain (1809-1889), in the 1830s, and bequeathed it to his own son, Wm. B. Tate (1819-1903), upon his death. (He mentions the "old Chaimberlain Conveyance" of 1833 in his will.) Originally interred in the Chamberlain family cemetery in May Spring, his body was removed with other burials to Martha Sunderland Cem., Hamblen Co., in the early 1940s to make way for Cherokee Lake. Children: Margaret C.; Wm. Brown; Comfort Knox; Jennet (Jane) S.; David; John Knox; Elizabeth; Edward; and Tennessee J.
