Ernest Hofmann became a naturalized citizen in the USA during boot camp in Fort Jackson, Florida on December 1, 1944. He was in Company D, 606 Engineering Command Battalion (Engr. Com. Bn.).

He was then sent to France. From what we understand, he was helping construct a bridge when some type of equipment started to fall off. Other soldiers and he held the equipment on themselves but he was severely injured in his shoulder when something started to fall off the construction. It took a great length of time to get him returned to a US hospital because of the United States heaving involvement in the war effort in Europe at that time. These circumstances made the injury even worse. Consequently Ernest spent many years in and out of the VA Hospital in Detroit, MI.

When Ernest entered the Army he was married with 3 daughters. After returning home his family eventually grew with 2 sons and another daughter.
