Carter spent most of his seven ML seasons in the bullpen, where his antics and capers entertained the fans. He insisted his nickname (Nick) came from his "cutting up" on the field. He was 4-1 for the pennant-winning Cubs in 1918 until he was sidelined by illness and forced to miss the World Series
