3 December 1852 — Independence County, Arkansas
William Asa Wood is my Great Grandfather. He was born to Charles L. Wood and Elvira Phoebe Meeker Wood, daughter of Grove and Phebe Ann Payne Meeker, on December 3, 1852. His parents were married on October 3, 1850, in Independence County, Arkansas. When his father disappeared, he and his younger brother, Ruben, went to live with their maternal grandparents, Grove and Phebe Ann. His mother, Elvira, remarried on February 11, 1862, to Henry Wren. We have never been able to find out what happened to Charles. We only have family stories that say he and one of Elvira's brothers left for California to look for gold, sometime around 1855. The stories say he came back to find Elvira remarried and then disappeared again.
William married Martha Paralee Tilley, daughter of John Archibald "Wayne" Tilley and Elizabeth Anne "Annie" Shipman Tilley, on December 3, 1871, in Independence County, Arkansas. They had the following children:
Charles Rueben, Thomas Henry, John Hiram, Joseph Edwin, Dora Phebe Ann, Asa Andrew, Harry, Fannie, and Bertie Pearl. There was also believed to be a set of twin girls who died very young.
William died on January 3, 1897. Martha burned to death when her dress caught fire while cooking. We do not have a date of death for her, but she outlived William. We do not have any photos of William.
