Nov. 6, 1931 –– Oct. 31, 2010 ASHEVILLE, N.C. –– Edward Francis "Sarge" Alberts, 78, of Asheville, N.C., formerly of Keokuk, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1931, in Keokuk, the son of Edward F. Alberts and Frances Ann Kimbrough Alberts Lillard.

He was married to Peggy Sue Littleton Alberts. She died in 1991.

He retired after 20 years in the United States Army.

He was the co-owner of A&M Auto Service. More recently, he was a jewelry instructor at Haywood Community College in continuing education with special interests in casting and lapidary.

He was a founding member of Mountain Metalsmiths Association.

Survivors include: two sons Dale L. (Doris) Alberts of Asheville and David F. (Ruthie Cohen) of Arden, N.C.; two grandchildren, Edward and Meagan Alberts; and two sisters, Doris Burchett of O'Fallon, Mo., and Cecilia McLaughlin of Green Top, Mo.

He also was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Greaves Mortuary, Keokuk, with the Rev. Mr. William Cosgrove officiating. Visitation is from noon until the time of the service.

Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, with full military honors.
